It was found to be a small world when two Crawford graduates found themselves on the same 199-passenger cruise ship. Sandy Butler Van Schoonenberg ’70 (one-half of the Crawford Colt Mascot) and Dave Crouch ‘71, (San Diego CIF Long Jump Champion), were both passengers aboard the January 21, 2008 sailing of the Explorer II out of Ushuaia, Argentina. Bound for the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, the trip was quite an exciting adventure for all of the passengers. Responding to the suggestions of the Cruise Director, Sandy was a major participant in letting passengers arriving at the Ushuaia airport for the next sailing of the Explorer II how rough the water can be in the Drake Passage. (Sandy apparently did a good job of pretending to be seasick – J. F.)

In the photo above Dave and his wife Mary display on their fingers the number of continents they have now visited. This picture was taken on a hill overlooking Almirante Brown station, an abandoned Argentinean Base located on the Antarctic Peninsula. The trek up the hill for this picture and an exciting slide down the steep slope on their back sides, was well worth the effort. Dave even climbed up once more to take another slide down the hill.
