Yes, that’s me. I was the kid who was chosen to be the student speaker — such as it was — during the dedication of Walt Whitman Elementary. It took place in the auditorium and I remember not being afraid — until I saw how many people were sitting in there. I remember I had to write a short essay about Walt Whitman to read that day. The beginning of my writing gig!  I later went to Hale Junior High for seventh grade.  They bused us over there because it was so far from the North Clairemont neighborhood I lived in near Whitman Elementary.  Then they built Einstein Junior High and switched us, so eighth grade was there.  Our family moved out to Lake Murray/San Carlos after eighth grade, so ninth grade was at Lewis Junior High in Allied Gardens, then Crawford for three years.  I had no idea there was a photo. Thanks so much for finding this and sending it to me — Candy Mann Sharkey ‘67

Wow!  A Junior High Trifecta!  And you weren't kicked out of any of them. I expect you got good at making new friends.  I went to 5 schools in 2nd grade, but that's because we were couch-surfing waiting for our Navy orders to join my dad in Guam.  I should have stayed home.  That's where I contracted polio -- JF

P. S. -- Do you know what Clairemont and San Carlos have in common?  Carlos Tavares developed the new subdivision on Morena Mesa and named it after his wife Claire.  Actually her name was Marjorie, but her MIDDLE name was Claire.  When he did another subdivision near Lake Murray, Claire suggested he name it after himself -- San Carlos.
