LaShell, Corinne Miller, Anna and Paul Chamberlin, Me, Spencer, Lisa Haskell, and
Joan Dalrymple at my place on January 13, 1992. It sort of looks
the same, except the guns were stolen a long time ago.

tractor. I visited during the first week of May. It was hot
and muggy.

Richard
Bertain, my 11th Grade English teacher at Crawford High, also taught
journalism. He convinced me to join the class my senior year, then
went off to Harvard for some graduate classes, leaving me with another
teacher. I credit Mr. Bertain with encouraging me to become a
writer. In May 1992 he was working in some capacity in the George
H. W. Bush administration and I was doing research at the National
Archives for my book on the USS Saratoga (CV-3). I gave him a call and he took me to lunch.
