MISSION BEACH
3254 Strand Way
1967-1970
Mary
Frigerio and Lou Wintersteen. Mary and John Frigerio owned the
apartments Jeff and I moved to in September 1967. The Frigerios
lived in Lake Opatkon, New Jersey and came out once a year to check on
their property. John was Italian and English was his second
language. Any alterations we made to the apartment were met with a
statement from John that sounded something like, "Summer rental-um no
like-um". He never cared that we were year-round renters.
Lou was our beloved landlady. She's holding Cindy, her older
dachsund. Mary has the younger dachsund, Gaylord, on her
lap.

Jeff poses with his 1938 Chevy on the boardwalk. The properties
on both sides of our complex were undeveloped sand dunes. You
could safely park if you left your rear wheels on the alley
concrete. If you arrived home at night in a less that sober state
you might forget that imperative. This photo was taken after,
eventually using a winch, we got Jeff's car onto the boardwalk.
We were a short block from the roller coaster, so he was able to drive
it to safety. (right) Terry Glassford, Jeff's North Lima,
Ohio classmate ("Go -- Zippers!!") visited him at the beach. Jeff
is wearing his Sounds of '68 band outfit. The group played behind
hypnotist Dr. Michael Dean at the Catamaran Hotel
Jeff
claims Doug "King Kong" Kvandal opened his trunk and broke off the
hinges. I'm not sure why he's pretending to escape. A sharp
eye will spot the Sigma Pi and San Diego State decals in the rear window.

In
the Spring of 1968 I was a cadet teacher for Mrs. Sturtevant at Pacific
Beach Junior High. I must have invited some of my 7th Graders for
a beach party. That's Jeff below probably leading the kids in a
Kumbaya singalong.

The
See Family lived on Mount Helix, but maintained a summer cottage next
to us on the boardwalk. Tom LaShell is at the center of this photo
with Sally See leaning on his chest. Red-headed Linda See is
sitting next to him. "Fuzzy John" Aaronson and I are at the
right. Eileen See is left of center, while Patty Zolezzi squints
at the camera.

Sharon See
has taken my place on the right. Jack See is working on his bike
and the rest of the gang remain in place. Jack See and Patty
Zolezzi were boyfriend and girlfriend.
Ken and Jo Ann Ptack visited in the Spring of 1968. They were also visiting Ken's family
and friends prior to heading to Flight School at Webb AFB in Big
Spring, Texas. So many Marines were in the flight school pipeline
at this time that some of them ended up being trained by the United
States Air Force.

Her name was Sharon Martin and her birthday was September 25th. The Martin family
was from a town near March AFB and visited Mission Beach for a portion of the summer.

These
photos were taken on the bay side of Jamaica Court. That's Jeff above,
with future wife Joan Antofte. My best friend from high school,
Gary Bonwell, and I pose below. As always, Tom LaShell is
someplace he shouldn't be.

The Miss Mission Beach contest. I think it was sponsored by Hamel's
Surf Shop on Ventura Place. It must have been 1968, or possibly 1969.
