SPRING VALLEY

8910 Olive Drive

Family lore says we bought a 1/4 acre tract in Spring Valley because my dad wanted to live in the country.  He got it stocked with a goat, geese, chickens and rabbits.  I think Mom must have been the photographer because she's not in any of the shots below.  I think we lived in Spring Valley from 1948 to 1950.  1949, I believe, produced the coldest temperatures on record in San Diego County.

I wonder if the photo of Pops in uniform was taken the same day as the
group shot of the USS Rexberg crew posted on the previous page.

Vicki and me.  Could this be the Orange tree seen in the color shot below?

Didn't take too long to establish the place as "Fry's Corral"

If Mom needed to use the family Hudson we all left early in the morning to drive Dad to his ship at the Sub Base.
That involved driving Federal Blvd to Market Street to Harbor Drive to Rosecrans -- then all the way back home.

In the photo at the right I'm standing well back of the geese

It may have been the Autumn of 1950 when my dad came home and said something like "Pack your bags.  We've got orders for Guam."  Well, HE got orders and shipped out, leaving Mom to sell the farm.  We took the long ride to the Navy Hospital to get all our shots, then waited.  The Hurtado Family bought the farm and wanted to move in.  Still no orders.
