HELMS BAKERY
I couldn't resist sharing this photo of a restored 1936 Helms truck.
These appear to be the real deal, especially the slide copy on the left with specks on it.
This looks like a restored Helms truck at a car show. How cool is that?

This ad from the November 18,
1953 Union recalls a quieter time in San Diego, when the freeways had
names. Check out the directions to the new Allied Gardens
subdivision, which mention Helms Bakery.
This
photo looks northwest from
Alvarado Estates, I suspect, across the Fairmount Avenue/Mission Valley
Freeway exchange, probably from the early 1960s. That's the Helms
Bakery on the left, today's Penske Truck Rentals, at 4285 Camino del
Rio South

I'm throwing in this shot of
Mrs. Conkling's bakery truck because I know the back story. The
photo was taken in 1943, looking north from the intersection of
Chalcedony and Fanuel Streets in Pacific Beach. It must have been
taken by the bakery driver because that's my late friend Howard Rozelle
making a selection from the baked goods drawer, while his wife Florence
looks at the camera. That's Florence's brother, visiting while on
leave from the Army, directing traffic. Doesn't look like much
traffic to direct.
