Carnation Ice Cream
3036 El Cajon Blvd • circa 1962
Carnation served up ice cream on this spot from 1941
to 1988, when it became a Sizzler Steak House. Since 2013 it's been Lips Restaurant, a "Supper club run by drag queens
with nightly live acts, a cafe menu, gospel brunch and a kitschy
decor".
The "original" Carnation, circa 1950. I think it's the same tree.
The cash register
says 15¢ and the clock says 1:30 PM so maybe the folks at the counter
are enjoying an afternoon coffee break. The ice cream choices, in
the lower right hand corner, appear to be "Vanilla," "Peanut Brittle,"
"Fresh Strawberry," "Marshmellow," and "Chocolate". Hey, wait a
minute -- maybe a scoop of ice cream is 15¢. What if coffee was
5¢?
My
grandfather lived on Ohio Street, so when I would visit or stay with
him we would walk up there to get ice cream. Some times they would
let me clean out the mostly empty tub of ice cream. I lived in
Lakeside back in the day, so visiting the city and having ice cream
would be a treat — Stan Peterson ‘61
The tree in front of both the Carnation store photos answers your
question. It's growth pattern is too unique to be in different
locations, and the parking area is also identical. The remodeling
is special, as they did a ton of work moving windows, doors and support
columns — Earl Feldman '61
