"Camp San Diego" • circa 1910

There’s a lot happening in this photo of an Army encampment near today’s Submarine Base, with Presidio Hill — which wouldn’t become Presidio Hill until 1929 — hidden way in the distance. Someone has a home with a view on the hill, and a trail that may have become today’s Rosecrans Street is apparent at the base of the hill.  That appears to be a livestock enclosure in the right foreground with soldiers gathered for “chow” near the white tents.  I see a cart and white horse (or mule) and soldiers standing around a campfire as well.  Maybe they’re preparing lunch. I suspect the “Camp San Diego” writing is tongue-in-cheek, as I could find no instance of a permanent Army camp anywhere near Point Loma.
