Mission Valley Photos

Looking east from the Presidio at a
Mission Valley that appears to be dairy lands. The windbreak of
trees at the upper left center might be "Pappy" Hazard's place, where
Hazard Center is today, and where Highway 163 heads north through the
canyon up onto Kearny Mesa.

This looks like it was taken looking east
from today's Presidio. Schuyler Bunnell took photos around San
Diego from 1928 to 1935.

Looking west towards Mission Bay across I-8 and 163 circa 1967. Challenge Dairy is in the foreground below.

Mission Valley Center is almost completed in
these two aerials of Mission Valley taken by Howard Rozelle on October
23, 1960. That's Bowlero Bowling Alley, across the freeway from
May Company.

This Howard Rozelle aerial,
possibly taken around 1958, looks all the way west to the Flood Control
Channel. On the left is the Highway 395 and Highway 80 freeway
interchange. Of special interest is Westgate Park, where the
Pacific Coast League Padres played for a few years. Fashion Valley
Shopping Center is there now.

There’s still a little greenery
in this beautiful color shot, possibly looking west from Cromwell
Court. It looks like some major freeway construction is going on.

Looking East from the Presidio around
1936, photographed by Henry Withy. A keen eye can make out the "S" on Cowles Mountain at
the center of the photo. The brilliant white Carmelite Monastery
at the north end of Hawley Blvd can also be seen on the bluff to the
right of center. Mission San Diego de Alcalá
I can't quite figure out where
this Henry Withy photo was taken from. Perhaps Kensington. Mission San
Diego de Alcalá is about to be covered in a cloud -- or perhaps the
cloud is heading west. Grantville and Mission Gorge are visible to
the right. (Below) A colorized view of the above photo is so good
it looks like an original Kodachrome.

This stunning shot by the iconic San Diego
photographer Lee Passmore appears to have been taken during the great
Flood of 1916, probably from the bluff where the Presidio is today.
